Yoga Therapy Consultations

We start from the principle of treating the whole person and of prevention being better than cure, drawing on the healing power of nature.  The initial consultation will be to get to understand your health journey to date, your perspective on your challenges and your current intentions.  I will want to find out about your health history and current symptoms, lifestyle and nutrition habits, emotional and mental stressors that you feel are affecting your well being. Yoga therapy is applying an understanding of the integration of mind, body and spirit to heal the whole person.   I will advise you on diet and lifestyle choices and aim to empower you to be able to integrate these into your life.  This might involve some kind of fasting for the purposes of elimination and cell regeneration or increasing some food types, nutritional supplements and some initial guidance on movement and breath centred mindfulness practice.

In subsequent sessions we will work together to evaluate the effects of any changes you have implemented, to consider the obstacles to progress that may have arisen, to reassess diet and lifestyle choices and to help you develop an independent practice that is maintainable within your daily routine, that will contribute to your wellbeing, based on your particular needs.  We will monitor through conversations and ideally through your journalling, how you are progressing towards your intended outcome.  If appropriate I can refer you to a laboratory for testing to find any additional information to help us get to the bottom of your health challenges and guide my recommendations.

I have many years experience as a Yoga practitioner and teacher.
Yoga has given me a way to get through some of the most difficult times in my life physically and emotionally and come out feeling more joyful.
Yoga therapy has taught me to take my physical and emotional state, patterns of diet and behaviour, attitude, relationships, energetic balance and environment into consideration when enquiring into what is going on for me.  Rather than accepting the stresses of the modern world and the massive disconnect between how society sees the world and how I experience it, I honour my own wisdom and gravitate towards what I recognise does me good and therefore has a positive impact on my life and that of those around me.  In this way I move towards wellness.

The therapeutic practices of this vast ancient discipline have withstood the test of time and can be used collaboratively with modern science, which is now proving the efficacy of this millennial wisdom, to positively influence habits and so transform lives.  The aim of Yoga is to end suffering, by providing a system that corrects our distorted view of reality. Yoga therapy accesses the experiences of the body and their capacity to restore balance in the mind, which is only one aspect of our being.  The body provides a ground reference for the mind. Simplistically, putting only wholesome nutrition, appropriate to us into our body and moving the body in a calm, strong way, we can mirror the body with our minds and so affect the chaos of the thoughts.

It can be challenging to allow stillness and calm to emerge, because thoughts will always bubble to the surface and we may want to push them away.  Our busy lives and the consumer society that we live in, will sometimes pull us from our intended path, so by making manageable adaptations to our diet and routine and having a daily practice of enquiry, we are more able to make lasting change.  We can affect our emotions through our breath.  Slow diaphragmatic breathing has a calming effect on the mind.  More fiery breathing practices can energise and focus our power.  Something as simple as breathing, stimulates our body's capacity to heal. It transforms us in the same way that compassion, empathy and connectedness to others influence the mind.

Yoga can bring a sense of integration.  Not only can we restore and maintain health and ease in body and mind, but we can evolve the way we perceive ourselves, others and the world.

"I was a complete novice when I started about 6 months ago, now I try not to miss a session. Fiona really does help people at every level to enjoy yoga. As an aside it has really helped with work stress, parenting and my mental health generally (which I was not expecting!)" Juliet

"The Jones Family have been practicing
yoga with Fi for all of this year. I take my husband and two tweens/teens to the session. We all love it and benefit from the exercises to the deep recharge relaxation at the end. The kids really unwind. Not an easy thing to do, teaching awkward young bodies that are growing and learning to move. And guiding stiff older bodies that need new strength. We love you Fiona and cant wait for the next time!" Elise

"
Fiona’s yoga classes offer the perfect opportunity to develop your yoga practice, whatever your current level. She is hugely sensitive to each person’s needs and  takes great care to fine-tune her individual support." Rob

"As a newbie to yoga, I have found Fiona to be an excellent teacher. She is very patient, even with uncoordinated people such as myself! She regularly adapts the exercises to the individuals' needs so you get the maximum benefit, and gently encourages you to go that little bit further. So yes, recommended." Chris

"
Farnham friends, go to this class! It's the best. That is all." Josh
